Adventures with Chef Pisto

While many of my friends were headed to the Bahamas I decided I’d take my wife on a cruise through the majestic Chilean Fjords and sample the diverse cuisine of South America. I chose Silver Sea cruise lines, because they’ve always been good to me in the past. As it turns out, this trip was one of our most memorable and relaxing.

We flew into Santiago, Chile and met our good friends Roy & Maryellen Thomas and Bill & Jill Rice. We immediately selected a restaurant and headed out to dinners

Chile Santiago - “Chose Galcon for dinner and ordered the King Crab, steamed in the shell. $100 crab! Delicious but pricey
Our chef at Galcon displays one of the prized crab
For a small city Puerto Montt is a very busy port.
Look at the size of these sea urchins I found in Puerto Montt!
Left Santiago and,After a day at sea, we arrived at Puerto Montt, Chile at daybreak
The colorful port of Puerto Montt, Chile with our ship in the background.
After tasting, we agreed our Mendocino urchins are much better.
Wow! We found these drying seaweed, mussels, and clams and native honey at this Chilean market.
Beautiful colors, robust smells!
I Just love the markets!.
Not a California catch—hake and congrio, a firm white fish with an eel-like tail that has a mild, sweet taste.
Chile market- I talked with this Chilean fishmonger about the local catch.
Beaver lama- “We had to sample ‘The Wild Dinner’ prepared by a French trained chef in Punta Arenas Chile. Here they served us several courses including: geese, sea bass, hare and, pictured here, ceviche and krill. We had a whale of a good time!
Chile wool-”Wool is an important export in Chile and my wife couldn’t pass up all the colorful hand-dyed yarn.
Chile- “These Laguna San Rafael fishermen are still fishing the way they did over 100 years ago.
Chile-heart boat- “Only My Heart” in Chilean waters.
Fjords- “Stunning ice landscapes on all sides of the ship..
Chilian fjords - Three days at sea surrounded by glaciers.
The Silver Seas Corporate Chef, David and I became fast friends. David is a friendly Englishman with an international culinary background.
Cher ice- “my lovely wife, Cher out on the deck.
Ship dinner - food was fab international fare.
Mariachi- Silver Seas picks up local entertainers in ports of call setting the stage for a unique performance each night..
Key Uraguay - A fountain in Montevideo, Uruguay is a place where lovers profess their love by placing a lock on the fencing. My friend Roy had been looking for antique lock for his wine cellar for several years and found it here.
Uraguay- “Had to get out of this busy food court.
We all enjoyed a traditional All BBQ meat luncheon of lamb & beef in Argentina.
Uraguay market-”I was in Montevideo looking for dried mushrooms and found this market on a side street.
